How to View Your Connections Recent Activity on LinkedIn

[updated in 2019 to reflect changes in the LinkedIn user interface]

[note – LinkedIn is constantly updating their service. Please let me know if anything in this post appears to be out of date and I'll do my best to update it]

The activity feed is something that LinkedIn continues to update.

In the past they completely removed it.

Then, somewhere around May of 2014, they added the activity feed back, but not in the same place it was before.

When LinkedIn overhauled their look and feel, they still included the activity feed – but how you get to it changed.

The activity feed is a great tool for networking and for learning about your clients and prospects. I hope your find this post useful.

I'll show you a couple of ways to view someone's activity feed below, but first, lets talk about why you may want to in the first place.

Why View Someone's LinkedIn Activity Feed?

Depending on how active a person is on LinkedIn, the activity feed can provide you with a nice overview of what is going on in their world. Here are some of the things you can learn from your connection's activity feed:

  • Topics of interest to them via content they share (i.e. as information they post or links to news articles, etc.)
  • Content they like that shared by other users
  • If they changed their profile photo, title, job role, etc.
  • Other LinkedIn members they are connecting with
  • Groups they join and discussions they participate in
  • Who they follow (i.e. company, influencer, channel or publisher)

This information can be a big help in building your personal and professional relationships. Many of my customers like to review their connection's activity feed before a meeting or phone call so they can:

  • Ask them about something they read
  • Suggest books, articles, and other resources their connection may like
  • Ask them about their recent connections and refer them to similar people
  • Congratulate them on a new job. Talk to them about their new responsibilities. This can be a great way to uncover opportunities for new business.
  • Join the same or similar groups to similar connections (birds of a feather

I'm sure you can think of many other ways to use this type of information to have more meaningful conversations. Certainly, more meaningful than the typical "just checking in" call.

How to View Someone's Activity Feed

To view someone's activity feed, first navigate to their profile on LinkedIn. Scroll down to the Activity Section of the profile. There you will see the most recent 4 or 5 activities for that person.  Here is an example, using my friend Dan Stalp's profile:

accessing activity feed from profile

Clicking on the "See All" link brings you to the activity page.

LinkedIn Activity Filters

As you can see, there are different ways to filter a person's activity at the top of the page. You can use "Posts" to see the latest posts your contact has shared.  "All Activity" shows items they created AND things they have liked and commented on.

Viewing Your Activity

Sometimes, you may want to view your own activity. For example, maybe you are looking for the article that you shared 3 days ago. Here are the two easiest ways to get to your activity feed.

The first is to use the main LinkedIn menu. Click on your picture and select Posts & Activity

My LinkedIn Activity

This will bring you to a screen similar to the one we saw above:

You can also book mark the URL if this is something you do often.

Using a Mobile App

Accessing your connections activity feed using LinkedIn's mobile app works exactly as described above. Here is a screen shot of Dan's activity using the LinkedIn app on my Android phone:

LinkedIn Activity on Mobile

One difference you may notice is that the mobile app has replaced Documents with Interests. That could be a hint of things to come in the desktop version.

A Note About Privacy Settings

Be aware that LinkedIn provides some privacy settings that affect what you see in someone's activity feed (and what they see in your feed).  If you are logged into your LinkedIn account, these links should take you to the settings page so you can review the options for each setting:

  • Turn on/off your activity broadcasts
  • Select who can see your activity feed

Do You Have a Tip to Share?

Leave a comment with your favorite way to use the activity feed (or LinkedIn).
